EARLY

January 22, 2010

This morning I got up at 5:15 and cleaned the dance studio.  I was grumpy but the sunrise was beautiful.  Getting a fresh bagel on the way helps.  There is a part of the cleaning routine where you open the fire escape door and shake the dry mop out into the dawn dark air at rooftop level and it is cold and beautiful and a bit existential.

I’ve been listening to Fleetwood Mac while I clean.  Lindsey Buckingham has basically only written one song in his life, over and over (not the song “over and over”) but I really like the song he keeps writing.

Human Pyramids

January 22, 2010

Man, Lexie of the Lexie Mountain Boys has the coolest blog.  Basically she interviews art-lifers/life artists and asks them this interesting question:

Why do you do these things? No, really, why? How does it make you feel? What’s it like when you are unable to do these things?

It might be simple but to me it hasn’t been obvious why anybody creates anything.  It is possible NOT TO.

Where does it all go?

January 21, 2010

I’m watching this pile next door to my job in Longueuil.

More to come as winter continues!  I will let you know.

In the meantime: (stick it out to 3:45, holy shit)

Raincoats

January 10, 2010

It’s cold here in Montreal, but when I think about the cold, it’s nothing compared to what my friend from Calgary described: ICE FOG.  Dear lord.  It’s so cold the AIR FREEZES.

I went skating in Outremont, played synthesizers, and did a lot of laundry.  Not such a terrible weekend.

I am getting the Raincoats reissue, which I’ve been excited about for a long time!  Here’s their excellent Kinks cover, which first got me into them.

Good omen

January 3, 2010

Well I know that 2010 is just one year closer to 2012, but on New Years Eve I found a $100 bill on the dance floor.  Canadian, of course.

I have a very good feeling about 2010.

Vintage Violence

October 29, 2009

I’ve been listening to John Cale’s first solo album.  The chorus of this song is really what he does best.

Speaking of vintage violence, my vintage store is unfortunately, basically, no more.  I pitched all my vintage into a big dumpster a few weeks ago, for reasons I’d rather not get into.  It feels good to have way less shit!  So, I’m going to be doing more writing instead, and here, writing about writing.

Here’s Little Richard

October 28, 2009

The good news in this song is that Little Richard has a really good friend who isn’t afraid to tell him what is actually going on.

PS. Mississippi Records has reissued Armchair Boogie!  And I have it!

Scritti Politti

September 28, 2009

Well, so much for regular posting in my vintage store.  I’m going to get back to it, hopefully next week, just as soon as I can find the time and energy.

In the meantime, here’s another song I’ve been listening to a whole lot:

Sorry for the weird cut off, I couldn’t find another version.

Also, Ryan Power, as a real band, finally, is playing in Montreal this Saturday at 3:30 pm at Phonopolis! We had a super great show this Saturday, not all that quietly, at Radio Bean.  Check it out!
